Definition of R-Value

Definition of R-Value

What is an R-Value and how do you decide the amount you need? This can be a tricky question to answer, largely because it is dependant on numerous factors. First things first, let’s discuss R-Value. According to the Department of Energy, “an insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-Value”. The higher the R-Value the better the effectiveness of insulation.

The R-Value is dependant on 3 variables: insulation type, its thickness and its density. Some types of insulation slow the flow of heat more effectively. R-Value also regulates the price point of the various types of insulation, the higher the R-Value equals higher retail price. It is also important to note, when you increase the R-Value, you also increase exponentially the your ability to conserve energy.

Why R-Value is Important

An often overlooked impact of R-Value on your home is the wear and tear on your HVAC systems. When your home isn’t insulated properly, you lose much of the heat your furnace is producing. This causes your unit to work harder than necessary to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. More benefits include:

  • Better cooling in summer
  • Better heating in winter
  • Longevity of heating and cooling systems
  • Lowers your carbon footprint
  • Energy savings
  • Less money spent on HVAC repair
  • Increases the value of your home

Michigan winters can be bitterly cold, often with dozens of inches of annual snowfall. Your home is likely the largest investment you will make in your lifetime. Such a large investment requires maintenance and upgrading. Upgrading the insulation in your home will increase the comfort of your home AND save you money.
