Split Systems

Split System air conditioners are by far the most common type of central air found throughout the US. A split system comes in two different parts. One part is located inside of your house and another is outside. Inside, there is an evaporator coil that removes heat and moisture from your house.

The outside unit has a condenser coil that releases the heat outside of your home. The compressor also pumps refrigerant between the two coils. This system provides effective cooling solutions to homes and is really economical for homes with a furnace. It can share the ductwork of a heating system, so there isn’t too much extra work to do.

Heat Pumps

This type of system is a variation of the traditional split system. This system can actually be used for both heating and cooling because of how it works. During the hot months, it can pump hot air out of your home. During the winter, it will do the opposite and pump hot air from outside into the home.

While it is beneficial, heat pumps are typically better for mild climates. In other words, they will not work as well in climates that have intense cold weather. Weather that stays below freezing for a long time will make it tough for your heat pump to warm your home. Regardless, they do a great and effective job cooling homes.

Packaged Central Air Conditioners

Everything in these packages come in a single unit. The evaporator, condenser, and compressor are in a single machine. This type of air conditioner is typically placed on a roof or concrete slab next to your home. This system will take air from your house and return cool air using ducts.

This is a great system when combined with heating coils or a natural gas furnace. It eliminates the need for a furnace inside your home. This is a nice solution to save room and make for a quick installation because only one unit needs to be installed.

Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Houses without ducts can use a ductless mini-split system to keep their home cool. It combines the outdoor compressor and condenser with indoor air units. The indoor cooling units cool the room that they are in and refrigerant circulates between the outdoor and indoor unit. The main advantage of this system is that it can be installed without tearing down walls.
